Diabetes is caused by the failure to manage blood sugar properly. The exact cause of this abnormality is not known, but there are some suggestive factors which may lead one to have diabetes. Some of these factors are discussed below:
Lack of insulin production
This is the primary cause of type 1 diabetes. The immune system damages the beta cells responsible for the production of insulin. This, in turn, affects the processing of sugar for energy thereby leading to excess sugar in the blood and deficient in body cells for energy.
Insulin resistance is peculiar to type 2 diabetes. You will have diabetes if your body is unable to process the glucose produced by the insulin in the pancreas for energy. The pancreas tries to mitigate against this by providing more insulin to help glucose production, but as the body becomes more resistant to insulin, its production reduces thereby causing more glucose to be available in the blood. This usher in the onset of Type 2 diabetes as insulin production decreases and resistance increases.
Genes and family history
Genetics plays a critical role in influencing how you develop some diabetes types. Statistics show that diabetes forms a hereditary pattern in which parents having diabetes could also influence the child to have the same disease. Although this is not conclusive evidence it’s believed that ethnicity plays a significant role in the rate of diabetes.
Genetic conditions like Cystic fibrosis and hemochromatosis are both genetic conditions that can damage the pancreas thereby increasing the chances of developing diabetes.
Gestational diabetes is common among pregnant women as the hormones in the placenta disrupt the insulin response of the body. This eventually leads to the high glucose level in the blood due to insulin resistance. Gestational diabetes could further increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Also, when a woman delivers a baby of more than 9 pounds in weight, they are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
As you age, your chance of having type 2 diabetes also increase, and after age 45 you have the highest risk of developing diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is often detected at age 30. The rate of type 2 diabetes keeps increasing at an alarming rate among children, teenagers, and younger adults. This could be due to lack of regular exercise, increase in weight gain, and reduction in muscle mass.
Obesity can trigger insulin resistance. Known to be one of the risk factors of diabetes as the excess fatty tissue could lead to inflammation leading to insulin resistance.
Poor nutrition could also contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes. A diet rich in calories, cholesterol, and fat affects the body’s ability to allow insulin to function properly.
Lack of exercise
Exercise increases the muscle tissues ability to respond better to insulin. This is why it’s aerobic exercises are recommended to lower the risk of diabetes.
There are certain hormonal conditions which could lead to diabetes by causing insulin resistance. Some of these conditions include:
Cushing’s syndrome: This leads to an increased level of the stress hormone cortisol which will also increase the blood sugar level thereby leading to diabetes.
Acromegaly: this occurs due to excessive growth hormone in the body leading to excess weight gain and eventually diabetes.
Hyperthyroidism: Hyperthyroidism arises from overproduction of the thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland. This could lead to diabetes if left untreated.
